LONDON (AP) – Newcastle signed Joe Willock of Arsenal for an estimated $ 35 million in royalties on Friday after the midfielder had a successful loan period at the Northeast club last season.
Willock, 21, has scored for Newcastle in each of his last seven Premier League games last season.
This was his first exit from Arsenal, which he joined as a child.
“I am thrilled to secure our # 1 goal,” said Newcastle manager Steve Bruce. “We had to be patient and persistent, but it was worth waiting for Joe to come back.”
Willock will not be attending Newcastle’s Premier League season opening match at home against West Ham on Sunday.
Also in the Premier League, Danish defender Yannick Westergaard joined Leicester from Southampton for $ 20.8 million, easing the team’s struggles at center-back following injuries to Wesley Fofan and Johnny Evans.
