What statistics matter at the Detroit golf club?

For the third consecutive year, PGA TOUR is heading to Detroit Golf Club to play the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Detroit Golf Club, designed by Donald Ross, is 7,370 yards par 72. The course is very flat and covered in Poa greenery. The front and back nine play completely differently: the front is tree-lined and the back is wide open. The event is likely to be a “bird feast” given that the course showed very little resistance in the first two years.

156 golfers will participate in the Rocket Mortgage Classic this week, including reigning champion Bryson DeShambeau, Webb Simpson, Hideki Matsuyama, Jason Kokrak, Phil Mickelson, Jason Day, Bubba Watson and Matthew Wolff.

5 Key Features for Detroit Golf Club

Let’s take a look at five key metrics for the Detroit Golf Club. to determine which golfers have the highest scores in each category in the last 24 rounds.

1. Number of strokes: from a T-shirt

Most of the holes on the rear nine at the Detroit golf club are wide open, which really favors the bombers. If you need more proof, last year’s leaderboard was led by Bryson DeShambeau and Matthew Wolf, who are the two longest players on the TOUR.

SG: OTT in the last 24 rounds

  1. Bryson DeShambeau (+26.1) (+700)
  2. Cameron Champ (+18.8) (+12500)
  3. Charles Howell III(+17.1) (+8000)
  4. Bubba Watson (+17.1) (+4000)
  5. Tom Lewis (+16.8) (+14000)

2. The resulting strokes: approach

Using the approach in our statistics will be a good indicator of the current state, as is almost always the case. On a course where most of the players will play from the fairway, the proximity to the hole will be the delimiter.

2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic Best bets

Joaquin Niemann (+2800, Bet365): I strongly believe that Joaquin Niemann will start to accumulate victories in the PGA TOUR, but I have not supported him for a long time because I did not like the course that suits him. This will change this week.

Detroit Golf Club is the perfect place to practice your Wonder Child skills. Niemann is ranked at least 22nd in all five of my most important statistics categories this week. He went very far to the pitch and scored 14.7 hits on the field in the Driving Distance Travelers Championship: raise. The wide open floor plan this week will allow the 22-year-old Chilean to rip off his shirt and easily land punches as he approaches the green.

Niemann is also ranked fifth in the “Hits Received: Par 5. With four Par 5s at the Detroit golf club and his strength, he should be able to truly harness the power of the bird and the eagle.”

Niemann’s biggest detractor lately has been that he worried about the green game. Detroit Golf Club’s green percentage is about 8% higher than the PGA TOUR average. Given its distance from the target, combined with its wide open layout, I don’t expect green field play to be a major factor this week. All signs point to Niemann is well placed to earn his second PGA TOUR win at The Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Doc Redman (+5000, BetMGM): Doc Redman, who has finished in the top 10 twice in the past five starts, is starting to regain a form that intrigued many with his potential last season. Redman finished 62nd last week, but did so with 3.9 hits on the way. The 23-year-old got particularly hot on Sunday as he scored 2.0 hits on approach and will be looking to carry that momentum with him to Detroit.

Historically, Redman has played much better on light courses than on heavy ones, averaging 0.8 hits per round in light events, as opposed to playing in moderate to light events with roughly midfield. Redman also looks a bit like design specialist Donald Ross. During his career, he was in the top three four times in a row, and two of them were performed by Donald Ross; including finishing second at the Detroit Golf Club in 2019. Rocket Mortgage Classic looks like a great place to recharge Doc.

Byung Hoon An (+17500, Bet365): First of all: yes, I’m serious. Even though he’s spinning out of control and only hitting the top 10 last year, there is some reason to believe in Byung Hunan this week. Despite missing out on The Travelers, his stats were impressive.

For the second week in a row, he is gaining shots from both the target and the approach, which is the first time since October 2020. Despite the decent statistics, the main reason I am intrigued by An this week is his story. on the trail of Donald Ross. Benny finished 13th at the 2019 Rocket Mortgage Classic when he also missed out on a job with The Travelers a week earlier.

Ahn also has some success at the Sedgefield Country Club, another Donald Ross design that hosts the Wyndham Championship. In his last start at Sedgefield (2019), he finished third. It’s certainly a long road, but there is reason to believe Benny Ahn will be competing at the Detroit Golf Club this week.
