TRANSFER STATE: Renewal of the contract, Credit
IN Vancouver Whitecaps signed a contract extension with Derek Cornelius and sent the player on loan to Greek Super League club Panetolikos until December 2022, the club announced on Monday. Cornelius’s contract has been extended until 2022 with the option of choosing a club for 2023.
Cornelius, 23, has had one start in five games this season. He made 37 MLS appearances for Whitecaps after transferring from Serbian club FK Javor-Matis in the 2019 season. The center-back has played 13 caps for Canada.
“It’s important for Derek to keep playing to advance his career, and we worked closely with him and his representatives to find the best option,” Whitecaps CEO and Sporting Director Axel Schuster said in a statement for the club. “This is a great opportunity for Derek to test himself in a very competitive league.”
Panetolikos finished 12th of 14 teams in the 2020/21 regular season in Greece and narrowly escaped relegation after a 2-2 aggregate draw with Xanthi while remaining in the Greek top division on away goals.
Whitecaps will likely rely on Andy Rose, Erik Godoy and Ranko Veselinovic to move forward, although it could add another defender as well. The MLS secondary transfer window remains open for just under a month.
