Suffolk County Considers Hidden Discrimination against Estate Agents

Suffolk County may launch a covert investigation of housing discrimination by real estate agents.

The District’s Fair Housing Task Force is preparing to issue guidance to legislators on Wednesday to test the real estate industry. These guidelines can be used to build a rating system for real estate agents for how well they comply with fair housing laws.

The task force was formed two years ago following a Newsday investigation that found real estate agents were taking color home buyers away from white neighborhoods.

The state legislature last week also approved bills that would provide for similar undercover investigations in the attorney general’s office and provide additional anti-bias training for real estate agents.
