DETROIT, Mi. (WTOC) – Savannah native Timothy O’Neill will return to the PGA Tour this week after winning the John Shippen National Invitational, a two-day tournament for the country’s top black golfers, taking place in Detroit on Monday.
The 48-year-old played his final 68th round at the Detroit Golf Club and finished a two-round tournament with a five under score and won with two tosses.
O’Neill made seven birdies in the second round, including two in the last three holes, to win the title.
The win earns O’Neill an exception to this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic. This will mark the eighth career start of the PGA Tour for the former Johnson Atom Smasher and the first since the 2019 Genesis Classic.
WTOC will be covering the Rocket Mortgage Classic on Saturday afternoons and Sunday afternoons. Before Sunday’s final round, you can see the CBS Sports Special at The John Shippen National Invitational. It will air at 14:00 on WTOC.
