Rocket Mortgage Classic airs at 9:10 AM as part of the PGA Tour

Rocket Mortgage Classic will be streaming on 910 AM Superstation next week after the radio station owner struck a unique deal with title sponsor of the tournament, PGA Tour and SiriusXM.

All four days of the Detroit Golf Club tournament, July 1-4, will air at 9.10 am (WFDF-AM), said Kevin Adell, owner of Southfield station and cable station The Word Network.

According to a press release, the station will syndicate SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio, the first time a tour has allowed its broadcast to be syndicated. Coverage areas include most of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, northern Ohio and Indiana, and parts of Ontario.

“I called (Rocket Mortgage CEO) Jay Farner. He’s my neighbor, ”Adell told Crain’s. “I said, ‘It might be a good service to offer this to the Detroit community.’ This has never been done before. I just thought it would be a good opportunity for the community to listen to this. “

Adell said that after reaching out to Rocket Mortgage with the idea a couple of weeks ago, the mortgage giant turned to Sirius and the PGA to get approval for the idea. There are no financial components to the deal, Adell said.

“There is no license fee,” he said. “We do not make money from this. There was no charge because we don’t sell anything … 910 does not sell advertising. “

Aaron Walker, director of communications for Rock Ventures, said the 9:10 broadcast is a good fit for the tournament’s goal of reaching out to Detroit residents.

“The Rocket Mortgage Classic is more than a golf tournament – it is an event designed to improve the lives of Detroiters,” Walker said in an email. “Because of this, we wanted to provide all residents with the opportunity to listen to the broadcast of the event for free. We are grateful to our partners at PGA TOUR and Sirius XM for allowing this first AM radio broadcast. ”

Rocket Mortgage Classic is back after last year’s event, which was closed to spectators due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The organizers said that tickets for this year’s tournament will be sold out due to deferred demand for live sports. This star-studded course features some of the most famous golfers, including the reigning champion. Bryson DeShambeau and winner of the 2021 PGA Championship Phil Mickelson

“I am very grateful to 910 Superstation owner Kevin Adell for bringing this idea to life, and to the PGA Tour for their vision and flexibility in bringing this idea to life,” said Jason Langwell, tournament director, in a press release. “This is an extraordinary and extraordinary opportunity to introduce the Rocket Mortgage Classic to millions of listeners, and there is nothing more worthy than Detroit.”

Adell has been hosting more sports radio programming since last summer, when 11:30 (WDFN) switched from sports to HeartMedia’s Black Information Network, a 24-hour news show targeting the black community. Since then, 910 AM has contracted to broadcast non-local professional sports and other events such as the Kentucky Derby. He has broadcast the recent Detroit Grand Prix and Indianapolis 500 races.

Adell said the Rocket Mortgage Classic syndication is “primarily a service to the public,” but it also provides the station with greater visibility. He said he hopes to continue programming next year.

“People who can drive north in their car can listen … the 910 is gaining access,” he said. “It was a pleasure working with Rocket Mortgage. If not for them, we would not have carried her. “
