Report: Soulfly’s Max and Zion Cavalera Receive PPP Loans During Pandemic

The new evidence seems to corroborate the recent claim by Soulfly drummer Zion Cavalera that the band was not to blame for the financial difficulties that former band guitarist Mark Rizzo said he endured during the pandemic.

In conclusion, for those three who for some reason did not follow this story …

Last week, Soulfly announced that Fear Factory Dino Cazares will play the guitar for them about their upcoming US tour. This naturally leaves everyone wondering what happened to their usual guitarist Mark Rizzo, who was in the band for eighteen years and also played in Soulfly’s neighboring project Cavalera Conspiracy. Rizzo afterwards claimed he left group because, in his words:

“It has been a very difficult year. I have not received any support from Soulfly. There were no loans that were taken for the members of the group or the team … I had to go back and get a day job … There were years that were good financially, but this year – again, there were no loans, there were “Hey, let’s make a live video to make money for the band members, or maybe we’ll make a special deal.” Many of my friends have made special deals with goods. I mean, if you look on the internet, Soulfly hasn’t done anything for the band members or the team. It’s just wrong to do that to people at a time like this. ”

Spiritual master (and Zion’s father) Max Cavalera then fired back, saying that Rizzo hadn’t left, but was released for “personal reasons” before calling the guitarist crazy. However, he did not really address the “no support” topic, so public opinion still seemed to be on Rizzo’s side.

That’s when Zion went to social networks claim that Soulfly and the Cavalier family It was supported Rizzo during isolation, and Rizzo was “salty” because for some reason he did not realize that he could / should take a PPP loan as an individual:

“This is for everyone who doesn’t understand how the music business works. During the pandemic, independent contractors [most musicians] were able to get grants and the like through the government. The guitarist of my band for some reason did not submit these documents and is now trying to drag my name into the mud and play the victim. Many people buy into it.

“Now that the dust has settled, if anyone has any questions, feel free to write to me at DM LOL.

“The dude got angry because he didn’t fill out the paperwork and blamed us for it. And we paid him a large sum of money in February 2021 to set a new record. So how did we not help him survive the pandemic? “

This puts us in order: the records are easily accessible via ProPublica show that both Max and Zion received PPP loans, government subsidies widely available to businesses and contractors who were often 100% forgiven during the pandemic. Specifically, Max (official name Massimiliano) received loans of $ 20,583 in April 2020 and $ 20,833 in March this year, while Zion received $ 2,978 in loans last June and $ 3,800 in March this year. …

Why is it important? Well, if Max and Zion received individual PPP loans as independent contractors, then most likely Soulfly as a group. No – which means that Soulfly as a corporation / legal entity did not do this. In other words: Yes, Rizzo should have been on top of this.

(And it’s impossible for Rizzo to have a problem of misunderstanding that caused Rizzo to think the group was going to take out a loan, but only later realized that it wasn’t; he said that no one from Soulfly or the Cavaleras contacted him at all during the pandemic. it looks like he really, really, seriously did not realize that he could take out the PPP loan on his own.)

Some other random things to look out for:

-We cannot confirm that Soulfly did not receive loans as a corporation because we do not know the legal name of Soulfly’s business; it could be something as simple as Soulfly Inc., but it could just as well be literally anything. If they did get a loan as a company and took individual loans, which would technically be a scam. For now, suppose the Cavalier family did not commit fraud.

– The counter-argument that “Rizzo had to file his own documents” would probably be like this: “Well, why did Jumpdafuckup, LLC (or whatever it’s call it) NOT take out a loan?” … But, to be honest, there is all kinds of small print are the type of reasons that may occur. The fact that Soulfly didn’t do this doesn’t automatically make the Cavaleras heartless bastards.

-Max’s other sons / Zion brothers, Richie (from the Incite group) and Jason, also received PPP loans. There is no public record that Max’s wife and manager, Gloria Cavalera, received loans. However, it seems safe to assume that someone in the Cavalier circle – I would assume an accountant or a business manager – followed the ball in a way that Rizzo clearly wasn’t.

And, hey, you can look at all of this and think, “Hell, Soulfly could still put out a T-shirt, or do, or a live broadcast, or whatever to make money for the band.” And yes they could – and we can argue if they were obligated to do this all day long (remember that you have to spend money to raise money – merchandise and live streams don’t just produce themselves; therefore, such fundraising is not an automatic win). But remember … Zion also said that they paid Rizzo to record the new album! From their point of view, this might not have been a problem.

Rizzo has yet to respond to Zyon’s latest claims. But that’s the most I ever thought about a dude other than wondering what the hell is in that backpack he wears on stage.
