JONSBORO, Arkansas (KAIT) – A 135-year-old church in Jonesboro celebrated debt relief following a new building on Sunday by burning copies of its mortgages.
The first Christian church moved to a new building in 2012, paying off its mortgage in just under ten years.
Pastor Don Martin says financial freedom is a burden on his shoulders and the shoulders of the church as they can now focus on the future of their ministry.
“What we are doing right now, we have a vision committee that looks and says, ‘Okay, what ministries we, as a church here in Jonesboro, have to do, what we can do wonderfully,” Martin said. “So we just took a step back to look at this. But, of course, we have many plans for the future. “
Martin gave all the credit for paying for the building to the community.
According to him, they were incredibly generous and made sacrifices because of their love for the church.
“Like the men here, the people you saw here donated so much,” Martin said. “Some members of our church made real sacrifices because they love this church, they love each other, and therefore it was a great sacrifice.”
