When Dana and Erin Mahoney moved from Los Angeles to Bozeman, Montana about 15 years ago, the city in the Rocky Mountains didn’t even have a Starbucks.

With three daughters under 6 at the time, Ms Mahoney abandoned her corporate real estate career – and the long commutes with it – in search of what she called a more supportive environment where the couple’s children could grow up riding. skiing and working with a shovel. snow.

“I think people at my job and in my life were betting that we would be back within six months,” she said.

More than a decade later, with their youngest daughter moving into high school and their two oldest daughters attending or recently graduating from college in North Carolina, Mahoney is making plans to move from Montana to the Raleigh area. They sold their home, a luxury five-bedroom townhouse in downtown Bozeman, for nearly $ 1.75 million. According to Ms Mahoney, their decision to move was partly motivated by a desire to be closer to their children, but also by the fact that the sleepy city they moved to became, for better or worse, almost unrecognizable.

Downtown Bozeman now has three Starbucks, Lululemon and many trendy restaurants and bars. Visitors are driving the wrong way on one-way streets, and revelers are posting photos of their beer flights from local breweries on social media, Ms Mahoney said. Some have started jokingly referring to the city as Boz Angeles, even though the 2019 U.S. Census Bureau has a population of just 47,000, up from 37,000 in 2011.
