Pierluigi Gollini: Tottenham completes loan to Atalanta goalkeeper

How was Gollini doing last season?

Gollini was Atalanta’s first goalkeeper in the 2019-20 season, but last season he had to be content with a rotation with Marco Sportiello.

The former Aston Villa player still played 25 games in Serie A, retaining 10 clean matches.

However, he was excluded due to decisive matches, including Atalanta’s 1/8 final return match against Real Madrid. Having played in the previous defeat with a score of 1: 0, Gollini remained only on the bench, while Real Madrid won 3: 1.

Gollini did make his Italian debut under Roberto Mancini in 2019, but failed to make it to Mancini’s initial 33-man selection for the European Championship, which included four goalkeepers.

Why does Tottenham bring him?

Gollini has established himself as a quality goalkeeper playing for Atalanta in Serie A and the Champions League and has improved significantly after his days at Villa.

Club captain and World Cup winner Hugo Lloris remains at Tottenham, but his contract expires in June 2022.

It’s the same with current No. 2 Joe Hart, who was the goalkeeper in most of the Europa League and FA Cup matches last season.

Tottenham will play in the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2021–2022, with their campaign starting in August.

Paulo Gazzaniga, who spent time on loan at Elche last season, was also released at the end of June.
