Phil Mickelson Takes Part in Detroit’s Rocket Mortgage Classic

Just before the Rocket Mortgage Classic went on sale, the tournament added several new commitments to the tournament, including 2021 PGA Championship winner Phil Mickelson.

Mickelson, Patrick Reed, Webb Simpson, Kevin Kisner, Sunjae Im, Max Homa and Cameron Champ were announced Thursday morning. They join reigning champion Bryson DeShambeau (# 4 player in the world), Jason Day, Bubba Watson, Ricky Fowler and Harold Warner III on the course for the tournament slated for July 1-4 at the Detroit Golf Club.

Tickets for the tournament went on sale at 8 am Thursday.

Mickelson, 50, became the oldest golf tournament winner on Sunday when he beat Brooks Koepka in the PGA Championship, Mickelson’s sixth tournament. The 45-time PGA Tour winner will make his first appearance at the tournament, which is now in its third year.

Reed is a nine-time PGA Tour winner and 2018 Masters winner. He is currently the eighth most player in the world and won the Farmers Insurance Open in Torrey Pines, California earlier this season. Reed missed last year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic and finished fifth in 2019.

Simpson is ranked 11th in the world and won the 2012 US Open at the San Francisco Olympic Club. It was ranked eighth in the 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Kiesner, ranked 47th in the world, finished third at last year’s RMC and finished 46th two years ago. He has three career victories on his account.

It will be the first Detroit game for Im, who has one career win and is 23rd in the world.

Homa finished 42nd in the 2019 Rocket Mortgage Classic. He has two career wins, including the 2021 Genesis Invitational at the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, and is ranked 42nd in the world.

The champion tied for 12th in 2020 and 46th in 2019 at the Detroit Golf Club. He is ranked 103rd in the world and has two PGA Tour wins.
