NORWICH, England (AP) – Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmore, Scotland’s top European star, has signed a season loan to play for Norwich. his new club said Friday.
The 20-year-old Gilmore, voted Man of the Match since his debut for Scotland in a 0-0 draw with England, fought for playing time with European champion Chelsea.
“I was looking forward to coming here, playing as much as possible and helping Norwich City compete in the Premier League,” Gilmore said.
Gilmore has played for Chelsea 22 times and won the Champions League winner’s medal in May as an unused substitute in the final. Chelsea beat Manchester City 1-0.
A few days later he made his debut in Scotland in a friendly against the Netherlands.
After an impressive match with England, Gilmore tested positive for COVID-19 and was unable to play against Croatia in Glasgow. Scotland left Euro 2020 with a 3-1 defeat.
Gilmore is set to start playing for the newly promoted Norwich, who have won the tier 2 midfield title with another potential player signed on to a one-year loan. Oliver Skipp returned to Tottenham.
“We are delighted to invite Billy because we have lost some of the players in this area,” said Norwich coach Daniel Farke, whose team kicks off the Premier League season against two past champions, Liverpool and Man City.
Gilmore will team up with two other Scottish players, defender Grant Hanley and midfielder Kenny McLean, who missed Euro 2020 with injury in Norwich’s last game of the season.
