Orlando City announced this afternoon that striker Mateus Ayas has been loaned to Spanish second-division club Real Oviedo. The loan is available until June 30, 2022 and reportedly gives the Spanish side the option to purchase.
Aias officially joined Orlando City on August 22, 2020. from Watford. The 24-year-old Brazilian forward has been replaced by Oscar Pareja to add another attacking piece. A two and a half year contract was originally signed with the option of another year.
For 11 months in the club, Ayas played only six times without starts from the bench and played 32 minutes. He only appeared for Orlando City in the first two games of this season. Draw 0-0 vs Atlanta as well as draw 1-1 at Sporting CP, Kansas City… His only goal for the club was scored on 28 October 2020, scoring in the second half, adjusted for time. 4: 1 win over Atlanta United at the Exploria stadium.
“I am very happy to be able to play for a great club,” Ayas said in Spanish at his new club. “I hope I can do a great job with this shirt that has so much history and tradition.”
Considering his lack of playing time in 2020, Land of the Mane In 2020, employees gave Aias an incomplete rating. Our Michael Citro wrote:
Based on our sources, Ayas was expected to come to Orlando in the post-2020 offseason, but the opportunity arose to get him earlier and the club took advantage of it. Aias will almost certainly make a bigger contribution in 2021 after getting the chance to play the preseason with his teammates. He is a young and somewhat raw striker, but he has potential. I would look for him as a reserve player who can provide several spot starts if needed next year.
While it looked like Aias would become a larger member in 2021, this did not happen. This is partly due to the signing of contracts with Alexander Pato and Sylvester van der Water, as well as the return of Daryl Dyke.
What does this mean for Orlando City
The return of Dike and Tesho Akindele’s play left few vacancies in the forward position. Pato was injured in his first game of the season but has been training and should return soon. Due to the lack of playing time and the current line-up, Ayas had little chance of entering the field this year.
Ayas is still a relatively young and raw striker with a lot of potential. In the future, he could have become a scorer, but this has not happened at Orlando this season. This loan should allow him to get more playing time and continue to develop.
