One year after Fitwel® introduced the virus response module, 100 million SF commercial properties were certified

A growing list of major real estate players including Brookfield Properties, Nuveen Real Estate and Barings Real Estate, as well as large corporate tenants such as Salesforce, continue to optimize their portfolios to protect the health and well-being of residents.

New VRM updates include clarifications and enhanced paths for implementing strategies, as well as new policy templates for greater flexibility in implementation.

NEW YORK, Jul 23, 2021 / PRNewswire / – One year after the implementation of the Viral Response Module (VRM), Fitwel® – the world’s leading health building certification system – today announced that more than 100 million square feet of commercial properties have been certified. This is an important milestone that could positively impact the health of hundreds of thousands of building residents, and demand for VRM continues to grow. An innovative two-step VRM process enables companies to enact strong policies aligned with the best available sciences in order to certify at the enterprise level and then quickly and cost-effectively roll out across individual assets.

In the second quarter, Brookfield Properties, Nuveen Real Estate and Barings Real Estate represent some of the last major property owners to certify an enterprise-level operating policy. The entire portfolio of Brookfield Properties’ main operating offices in Washington DC received accreditation. BentallGreenOak continued its industry leadership by becoming the first company to receive a second VRM certification, covering its entire 25.7 million square foot Canadian portfolio after its US portfolio was certified earlier this year. Unico Properties has certified its entire 18 million square foot portfolio and is one of the first to receive large-scale asset-level approvals, with 30 buildings in six markets successfully implementing the company’s viral response policy.

Large commercial office tenants, including Salesforce, have also made significant progress in optimizing their corporate environments to reduce the spread of infectious diseases, using VRM to certify policies for their corporate portfolios in the second quarter.

“A year after we first announced VRM development, it is very encouraging that many of the world’s top property owners continue to implement and implement viral response strategies across their diverse portfolios,” he said. Joanna Frank, President and CEO of CfAD, which certifies and maintains the Fitwel standard. “We are also seeing large corporate tenants become more active in certifying their office portfolios, which reflects the practicality of the module’s strategies and underlines their strong desire to protect the health of colleagues and employees as we prepare for the biggest return to the office in history. “

Greg Meyer, Executive Vice President and DC Chief Executive, Brookfield Properties, said, “Across the region, tenants are returning to office and our goal is to provide a safe and healthy environment. Working with Fitwel to implement their VRM Strategy across our portfolio of operating offices was instrumental in this. We have successfully implemented effective measures to create healthy, flexible and productive offices, from helping us evaluate products and policies to stimulating behavioral change in our buildings. ”

As part of its ongoing efforts to establish and maintain a global standard for the design, programming and operation of buildings that protect the health and well-being of residents, Fitwel recently updated VRM to integrate the latest research on virus transmission in built environments. Given the rigor of the scientific evidence behind the VRM 2020 launch, this update does not introduce new strategies, but instead provides clarifications and expanded paths to achieve the strategies, as well as additional policy templates and protocol guides that support a return to full employment. Leveraging cutting-edge scientific evidence, VRM supports companies’ efforts to build a more resilient portfolio prepared to tackle COVID-19 as well as future infectious disease outbreaks.

Created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the strategies advanced in VRM have been developed with input from a diverse group of public health experts from leading institutions such as Columbia University Irving Medical Center and University of Queensland technologies and prototypes of industry leaders. The module provides out-of-the-box strategic solutions that enable companies to seamlessly apply Fitwel strategies for a multifaceted approach to optimizing health and wellness across all of their holdings.

Unlike other solutions that provide more general approaches to dealing with viruses, VRM Fitwel has established specific best practices that companies must follow, establishing the minimum requirements necessary to prevent virus transmission, while at the same time providing out-of-the-box policies to ensure effective and a consistent approach to industry management. … The module also provides economies of scale by making it available to deploy an effective viral response across entire portfolios.
