SPRINGFIELD, MO (KY3). We all know that COVID-19 has hit our wallets. We were really relieved. Most of us have received incentive checks. The unemployed were paid due to the pandemic. There are now emails circulating that say you can be forgiven on your student loan.
One email reads: Perhaps your student will be a good stimulus to forget about guilt and hope. f legislation “.
Dale Underwood received a letter. He graduated from Missouri State University over ten years ago. He, like most, graduated from high school with debt.
“I could make a down payment for a good house for what I owe. I mean the stimulus package itself, there are a lot of things with it, ”he said.
On Your Side showed the letter to the student aid expert.
“The email address it was sent from is not a business email address. It was a prospect and it was kind of a funny email address with lots of characters, ”said Becky Ahrens, director of financial aid at Drury University.
The email says: “Your application must be completed.”
“You cannot end an application that you haven’t launched yet. And if they ask you to finish an application on which you do not remember how you worked, most likely it is a scam, ”said Ahrens.
There are real loan forgiveness programs for teachers, government officials and healthcare professionals. There is a process.
“These are very specific types of loan forgiveness. And the best source of information about them is to call your loan service. Just like you wouldn’t call a utility company about a mortgage. If you have questions about student loans, please call the student loan support service, ”Ahrens said.
Underwood didn’t answer. He deleted the letter.
“We take so many things at face value. When it comes to the Internet, nothing is worth at face value, ”he said.
Be wary of accidental phone calls and emails about consolidation and loan forgiveness programs. If they use high pressure tactics, such as saying you should respond today, they are probably a scam.
