Official: Baba Rahman joins Reading on loan from Chelsea

Chelsea fighter Baba Rahman got his next mission and he also decided to accept it.

As confirmed today, the 27-year-old left-back has joined Reading FC for rent for the season. As far as is known, there is no call option attached to the transaction. As usual, he renewed his contract with Chelsea, although for some reason we extended it for two years, so now only expires in 2024 unlike next summer.

Baba is expected to help replace Omar Richards, who has joined Bayern Munich (!) on a free shuttle earlier this summer. Reading finished just outside the league playoffs last season, but got off to a pretty bad start this season, losing three of his first four in the league, and dropping out of the League Cup on the first hurdle.

This is Baba’s sixth loan to a fifth other team since 2016. It’s safe to say that he didn’t quite deliver on a promise he once made, although a series of knee injuries certainly had something to do with it. He’s okay these days (as evidenced by his good performance at PAOK in the second half of last season) so hopefully his time with the Royals is going well.

Good luck Baba, and please send our greetings to John Swift too!
