Niemann and Lewis Share 36 Hole Leadership at Rocket Mortgage Classic – The Oakland Press

DETROIT (AP) – Phil Mickelson created a buzz at the Rocket Mortgage Classic with his plans to return, and Bryson DeShambeau left endless questions about parting with his caddy.

On a packed leaderboard, Joaquin Niemann and Tom Lewis went about their business quietly to tied for the top spot ahead of the weekend at Detroit Golf Club.

On Friday, Niemann and Lewis hit 3-under 69 and 10-under 134, each completing 36 holes without a scarecrow. Troy Merritt (68), Chris Kirk (68) and Max Homa (65) hit back.

Round one leader Davis Thompson was one of eight players two strikes back. Thompson, 22, had over 73, a day after Detroit Golf Club’s record coincided with 63.

Two years ago, Niemann became the first player from Chile to win the PGA Tour with a six-hit win at The Greenbrier. Lewis, who is from England, is aiming for his first PGA Tour win.
