New grant initiative aims to help Opelousas business owners

The Building Improvement Grant Initiative helps qualified business and / or commercial property owners in Opelousas rebuild their property.

The Building Improvement Grant (BIG) is designed to help property and business owners restore and improve commercial buildings to create a positive visual impact, stimulate local investment, complement other community development efforts, and preserve the city’s historical identity and cultural values. … The program is a partnership between the city of Opelousas, the development area of the city of Opelousas and the main street of Opelousas.

“This is truly a win for the local small business owners who are an important part of our city,” said Opelousas Mayor Julius Alsandor. “We hope that the success of this new initiative will continue to grow and we can help more business owners in the future.”

BIG is a reimbursement grant and the recipient must match the reward amounts between dollars and dollars.

Opelousas Main Street offered the program to the City Development District board members earlier this year.

Some of the jobs that property owners can apply for include restoring building elements such as windows, installing awnings, lighting and electrical work, repairing floors, ceilings, and plumbing.
