Mortgage Assistance for Becker County Workers

The Home Ownership for Me Down Payment Loan Program reopens in Becker County.

This second mortgage loan is available to qualified buyers to purchase a home as their primary residence. There are no monthly payments or interest on the loan, but it must be paid back when the home is sold or when the first mortgage expires.

The loan is available to buyers who work and live in Becker County and meet income requirements.

The program is implemented by the Minnesota Midwest Community Development Corporation. “To ensure long-term success, all participants receive free homebuyer education and advice on housing issues,” said MMCDC President Julia Nelmark.

Work began with a participation in the 2018 Housing Institute proposed by the Minnesota Housing Partnership, a non-profit statewide affordable housing organization. Home Ownership for Me was the result of their discussions, which in part related to the housing needs of the Becker County workforce.

Participants at the 2018 Minnesota Housing Institute Housing Partnership in Detroit Lakes included Becker County Economic Development Board, Essentia Health, Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce, Mahube-Otwa Community Action Partnership, Frazi and Detroit Lakes, Midwest Bank, Detroit. Housing and Lakes Reconstruction Authority and MMCDC.

Funding organizations include Becker County EDA, Detroit Lakes Development Authority, Freysey City, Essentia Health, BTD, and Arvig.
