Mexican teen striker Santiago Muñoz joins Newcastle on 18-month loan agreement

Newcastle have signed with teenage Mexican striker Santiago Muñoz, Premier League club announced.

The US-born 19-year-old Mexico Under 23 has joined the Magpies of Santos Laguna on an initial 18-month loan with the option to make the move permanent in a story that bears an uncanny resemblance to the plot of Goal !.

The club said in a statement: “Newcastle United can confirm that Mexico U23 player Santiago Muñoz has joined the club’s academy on an initial 18-month loan.

“The 19-year-old, born in the United States, comes from the Mexican top division Santos Laguna, where he made his debut last year and scored three goals and three assists in 13 league games.”

Muñoz helped Mexico win the CONCACAF Under-17 Championship by scoring five times, including the overall goal of the tournament, and was part of the runner-up team at the World Under-17 Championship in Brazil.

He was also involved as the U-23s won the 2020 CONCACAF Olympic Qualification Championships earlier this year.

In the “Goal!” Santiago Munez, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, is leaving the Los Angeles neighborhoods to try to establish himself as a professional footballer in Europe with Newcastle.
