Mateja Oraveca on loan Philadelphia Union to Slovak club

Philadelphia have loaned midfielder Matej Oravec to Slovak second-tier club Zheleziarna Podbrezov until next summer, the club said on Tuesday.

Oravets, 23, has yet to make his MLS debut with Union. The former Slovakia national team player was acquired ahead of the 2020 season and was expected to provide competition within minutes for both the holding midfield and the center-back. He never found a foothold in Philadelphia during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign, making the bench in about half his games but never debuting.

This year he was loaned to the second team at Union 2 to make way for the first team.

Soyuz signed Oravec from the Slovakian club DAC Dunajska Streda, but previously played for Podbrezova and played 14 matches with the team. The club dropped out of Slovakia’s top division after the 2018/19 season and finished fourth in the second division last year as they aim to return to the top division again.

Leon Flach and Jack Elliott have both proven their ability to defend in the middle when Jose Martinez is unavailable, Philadelphia has plenty of cover in position.
