LGBTQ adults are more likely to receive federal student loans

According to new research Williams Institute, University of California, Los Angeles, School of Law. Thirty-five percent of LGBTQ adults have federal student loans, compared with 23 percent of non-LGBTQ adults.

The study found that more than a third of LGBT adults between the ages of 18 and 40 have over $ 93.2 billion in student loan debt. About half of them owe $ 10,000 to $ 49,999.

The data is further disaggregated by gender – 51 percent of transgender adults have federal loans, along with 36 percent of lesbian, bisexual, or gay cis women and 28 percent of gay, bisexual, or gay cisgender women.

The aim of the study was to provide information on student debt among LGBTQ adults, which the report authors noted is currently absent from discussions about student loan abolition.

“It is important that the current policy debate on loan forgiveness takes into account the impact on LGBTQ adults who bear the heavier burden of federal student loan debt,” said Jorge Valencia, executive director and CEO of the Point Foundation, which has partnered with the Williams Institute. for research. “The pandemic and the economic impact could significantly affect the ability of LGBTQ people to pursue higher education.”
