Bryson DeShambeau is an 8-1 favorite to repeat the PGA Tour’s Rocket Mortgage Classic, which kicks off Thursday in Detroit.

For the rest of the players, odds are in double digits, and this is where handicap Wes Reynolds, co-host of the VSIN golf show Long Strokes, is aiming for his best bets.

Here are his plays and comments on each of them:

Joaquin Niemann, 24-1

“Niemann finished fifth in his Detroit debut two seasons ago. The young Chilean is currently ranked ninth on the PGA Tour for driving range and 16th in average per bird. ”

Jason Cocrack, 27-1

Last week, Harris English joined Patrick Cantley, Deschambeau, Stuart Sink and Jason Cocrack as two-time winners of the 2020-2021 PGA Tour season.

“Kokrak missed a cut-off two weeks ago at the US Open, but Detroit Golf should be perfect for his game.”

Doc Redman, 44-1

“Redman has two tens in the last five starts. He has finished third or better four times in his PGA Tour career, two of which belong to Donald Ross, including second here in 2019. ”

Emiliano Grillo, 50-1

“Once again, Grillo stands out this week with up-to-date statistics across the board. However, nothing came out in Travelers last week, where he met on Friday but missed a one-hit cut. “

Maverick McNealy, 72-1

“McNealy finished eighth in his debut in Detroit last year and is very comfortable with the Poa annua / bentgrass mix he grew up in the West.”

Sepp Straka, 88-1

“It’s hard to call someone a track horse if the event was played only twice, but Straka would definitely qualify. He has the best result among all players on the field who played in this tournament both times, finishing eighth and eleventh.

“The Austrian also made the top 10 in 2021 and finished 10th last week in Travelers.”

Troy Merritt, 90-1

“Merritt finished eighth here last year. He also made six of his last seven cuts, including three from the top 10. Merritt is a player who knows how to make a lot of birds, and he has done it recently. “
