Motegi Toshimitsu traveled to Iraq on Saturday for the first visit to the country by a Japanese foreign minister in 15 years. He said Japan plans to provide loans of up to $ 300 million to Iraq to support its reforms and economic growth.

Motegi held separate talks with Iraqi President Barham Salih, Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein in Baghdad on Saturday.

Motegi said Japan will continue to work with the international community to help Iraq’s reform and development efforts in the wake of unrest in the Iraq war and inter-factional conflicts. He said that Japan wants to further develop bilateral relations in a wide range of areas.

Motegi said his country plans to provide loans of up to $ 300 million to help Iraq modernize its refinery so it can provide a stable energy supply and create jobs.

The Japanese Foreign Minister also said that the creation of a free and open Indo-Pacific region based on the rule of law will contribute to the development of the Middle East.

The Iraqi leadership agreed to cooperate with Japan on this initiative.

Motegi is on a 10-day tour of the Middle East. Destinations include Egypt, Palestine, Israel and Iran.
