Stephen Friedrichs has been selling insurance at the Fishers since March 1, but that wasn’t intentional. Friedrichs previously worked in the hospitality industry, traveling the United States as Director of Revenue for Marriott Luxury Hotels. But he was fired from this job in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Less than a year later, the Fishers resident forged a new career by opening his own insurance firm, the Friedrichs Agency, in Fishers through Farmers Insurance.

“COVID came and my (hospitality) budget was just depleted,” Friedrichs said. “Nobody flew anymore. Eighty percent of your rooms were for traveling companies. On March 23, 2020, that 80 percent dropped to zero overnight. Layoffs began to occur. In the end, I was shown the door, as were many of the company’s other directors of income. “

Friedrichs, 43, kept in touch with his former bosses at Marriott, waiting for him to return to work. But the outlook for the third and fourth quarters was bleak. As savings were dwindling and he needed to support a wife and five children, he decided to look into other job opportunities.

“I started down the path of a mortgage broker or financial advisor, and I actually had two options for moving forward,” Friedrichs said. “But then Farmers Insurance called when I was shopping with the kids and said they found my resume and thought I might be a good fit as an agency owner.”

Friedrichs was motivated, and the farmers’ insurance provided him with a door and brand recognition. The company helped him find and renovate an office near the city center at 8977 Technology Dr., Suite D, as well as hire staff. One of his employees, David Millikan, worked with Friedrichs to help fund his business acquisition, but then changed his mind and changed his career to sell insurance with Friedrichs.

“In the end, the only people who like insurance in this room are David and me,” Friedrichs said. “(Clients) don’t care. You’re like, “I have to work on my insurance, what a nightmare.” Right? We are here to make this transition easy for you so you can continue to live and find peace of mind. ”
