Failed! 5 ways to grow out of real estate mistakes

Mistakes in real estate (especially when you’re just starting out) are inevitable. However, if you approach failure with the right attitude, devote yourself to practice, and leverage the experience of mentoring, you will grow in this business.

One of our team members recently shared a quote from Thomas J. Watson with me, and I thought it was very inspiring.

“Do you want me to give you a formula for success? It’s actually pretty simple: double your failure rate. You think of failure as the enemy of success. But this is not at all the case. Mistakes can discourage you or you can learn from them, so keep making mistakes. Do the best you can. Because remember that this is where you will be successful. “

It can seem intimidating to just start working in this industry with so much to learn, so much competition and inevitable mistakes. However, there are several ways to customize yourself (and your thinking) from the very beginning. Here are some lessons learned and positive attitudes that you can use in your career.

1. Accept everything

Every time you make a mistake, you learn. Whether it’s talking to a potential buyer, meeting a potential seller in person, or working with a home buyer, you won’t necessarily get out of the park the first time — and that’s okay.

Give yourself the grace to screw things up and then think about what you can do next time to make it better.

2. Find your highest goal

When I started this business I was only 19 years old and in fact I was not a kid with a lot of confidence… Life has shown me some of the worst blows at a young age. However, I was determined to become a businessman.

At first I didn’t really believe in myself – but I believed in this business. I really knew that whoever I was or was not internally; I studied, learned and understood what the great state of New York gave me license because of.

I earned the right to help people — and that was a goal high enough to try again.

I teach agents to serve, not sell. Simply put, “how many families can I help this week” rather than “how many appointments can I make this week.” When you leave this place, you are setting yourself up for a win-win situation, no matter any mistakes you could do.

3. Learn from other people’s mistakes.

One of the best things you can do when you start is to find mentor, become part of a network, get a coach, or all of the above. Why? Because you will shorten the learning curve.

You can learn a lot from the experiences of others, for example, that pitfalls to avoid and which systems and tools work and which don’t. Just two caveats:

  1. Make sure you join people who are highly honest and committed, not just money.… Our business is not only a net profit; it’s about helping people move to the next level of life, so make sure you learn from someone who lives with that intention.
  2. Don’t forget to return. Consider the words of the late Maya Angelou: “When you learn, teach. When you get it, give it. ” It’s amazing how much we can learn from learning and giving. I have been doing this for over 30 years and I can tell you without a doubt that I learn from my students every day.

4. Stick to practice

Hand over compound with potential clients and people in your industry, if not every day, then at least four days a week. Your goal with these calls is to build relationships. To ask questions. Find out if they have questions – especially in the marketplace and at a time when change is so important.

It is natural for people to know how this change will affect their purchasing and trading power. Position yourself as a resource and don’t worry if you don’t get it right every time. Over time, you will learn from each conversation how to next the conversation is even better.

5. Don’t give up

Too many people define their days and lives by mistakes they have made, rather than a job well done. People give up, often without even realizing that they were on the verge of a breakthrough.

At my company we strongly believe in breakdowns because they make lead to breakouts. Rely on this business, your life, and the new lessons and skills that every day brings. When you do this, you will have much more results and more reasons to smile in your life.
