David Ornstein reports Athletic that Everton is in talks with Arsenal for a lease for the Ainsley Maitland-Niles season with a purchase option. Everton have submitted an offer, but Arsenal are still considering their options before responding.
At this stage, negotiations are underway with Maitland-Niles on a contract with Arsenal until 2023.
Last week we closed reports from other agencies where Everton was interested in leasing Maitland-Niles for the season. The 24-year-old will follow the lead of Theo Walcott and Alex Iwobi when switching between the two clubs.
Arsenal reportedly want about 20 million pounds for Maitland Nilesbut Everton would have preferred a loan.
Nothing is known about the size of the potential option, but the problem with options is always that everything is under the control of the buying club.
If they decide they don’t want it in six months, they can simply lower its value for the rest of the season and return it. If he proves to be an incredibly useful addition on their side, Arsenal will not be able to come back and raise their asking price.
Ideally, Arsenal would at least nudge Everton into accepting a loan with a commitment to guarantee the commission. But with Maitland-Niles playing such a limited role under Michele Arteta, any move can be better than nothing.
