Cyber Criminals Use Stolen Information to Get Student Loans in Your Name – WSB 95.5

ATLANTA. Cybersecurity experts say criminals are using information from college students to obtain fraudulent student loans. Young people often fall victim to attacks because most of them have not frozen their loans.

Dave Huddleston, Channel 2 spoke with local students to get their opinion on this increasingly popular scam.

“What? This is so suspicious,” said student Min Jung.

This is how Jungkook reacted when she was told that darknet thieves were stealing students’ personal information in order to obtain loans worth tens of thousands of dollars.

“This is absolutely insane; this is absolutely wrong, ”said student Laura Ekhieze.

Georgia State University professor David Maimon specializes in cybercrime. He works undercover to communicate with scammers and that is how he found out about this new scam.

“This is a huge problem that we are seeing right now, and it started in early August,” said Maimon.

Maimon said that the best way to protect yourself is to block and block credit and personal information.

“I strongly recommend that parents of students make sure their students have all of these services to simply prevent them from becoming victims of these crimes,” Maimon said.

Consumer Affairs Advisor Clark Howard said there are sites like Credit Karma that can help you block your credit for free. Students won’t have to repay huge loans, but it can take months to sort out all of this. He said their credit rating could be hit hard – just as they are just getting started.
