Changes when making a profit
When I think about design, I see it primarily as a thoughtful, proactive element in developing our results and shaping our results in life. In other cases, this is best seen in the overview when looking back at our project or personal history. The thing is, I’ve always enjoyed designing, whether it’s spaces, real estate, or my own life.
There are design elements that are intentional and others that are not so obvious; they just appear in the path. When I started my career as a real estate investor almost 20 years ago, things were pretty rough. Buy property, add value and sell it for a profit. This was the whole premise of the deal. However, with so few women in real estate investing, I knew I had the opportunity to do something different. In hindsight, I ended up designing or carving out a niche for myself.
Early in my career, I was shocked when I knocked on the door of my home before the foreclosures and felt like I was aware of a bigger problem. I didn’t know what that feeling was when I returned to my SUV, overwhelmed by the interaction I just had with a homeowner who seemingly gives up on it. When my heart was shaken, I called my grandfather, who urged me to get out of the car and go back to her door, because, in his words, “she was losing it before you got there, so someone is going to buy it. so it might as well be you. Oh, this statement hit me like a ton of bricks, and my heart sank even more when I began to picture the woman outside the door as my grandmother or mother who found themselves in a similar situation. How would I answer? What would I like someone on the other side of the door to do?
It was in this interaction that I changed forever and never looked at property the same way again. I wanted to run a relational business in a transactional environment. It was so difficult to explain to anyone. The question for me was, how can I change the situation, making a profit? My actions have been challenged and questioned. I was told something like: “Are you connected with the seller? What you are doing is not part of the investor manual. ” I help people. I helped the salespeople with financial difficulties, helped them find safe and follow-up housing because it was the right thing to do and I will do it again. While these incidents were not necessarily deliberate in the beginning, the position of the pieces on the board changed and made them part of my deal and part of my life as an investor.
Along the way, I noted the mistakes that sellers and buyers made. I also made some bad decisions and absolutely did not want to repeat them. I took these notes and wrote my first book, Real Estate and Wealth: Investing in the American Dream.
As I continued to work in the real estate industry, the concept of building a real estate portfolio as the foundation of financial wealth inspired me to write again, this time focusing on creating wealth for other women: Self-Sufficiency for Women: An Inspirational Book and Magazine.
When a need was identified during the pandemic, I used one of my locations to provide alternative education, not knowing that it would lead to collective homeschooling. The school is not just a copy of what is currently being offered; it is a health education center, including what is lacking in public systems. We have financial literacy through our programs; we have gardening; we want to develop lifelong learners interested in their world. I can even teach them to invest in real estate what they like. My 11-year-old son who goes to school is such a designer … I don’t know where he got this from. However, he likes to look at the property and imagine what the possibilities might be. He realizes early on that we use real estate not only for profit, but also to improve the lives of communities.
I am currently working on the opportunity to combine real estate and wealth creation, education and the intention to help others in a large-scale event with a mission: a social capital fund with real estate at the fore. We will strive to provide financial solutions not only at the micro level, at the level of individual transactions, but also to rethink or develop holistic health communities. Some of these developments may use modular or shipping container designs to make them more accessible, and we want to make sure there are healthy lifestyle options like gyms, green spaces and nutritious food nearby.
My team and I are building a virtual community where anyone with a real estate question can find answers. We are the guardians of our neighbors and we will strive to maintain this as our goal, both online and face to face.
Designer thread has woven the fabric of my career. In hindsight, it’s easy to see which parts have been assembled and how they fit together perfectly.
