Commercial Real Estate Hall of Fame: Daniel Musser of Newmark Zimmer



Each year, Midwest Real Estate News introduces a new class into its Commercial Real Estate Hall of Fame. Last year, despite its difficulties, was no exception. Daniel Masser has played a key role in shaping the commercial real estate landscape in Kansas City. As executive managing director of Newmark Zimmer, Musser has been involved in the development of over $ 3.4 billion in commercial real estate projects.

And many of these projects were large. Some of them are considered some of the most challenging and challenging real estate projects in the Midwest.

Masser, for example, played a key role in the development of the 4.1 million square foot Sprint campus, the 600,000 square foot Federal Reserve Bank office and operations center, the Beacon Hill renaissance, and the College Basketball Experience / National Undergraduate Basketball Hall of Fame.

Musser also recently participated in the development of the 1.5 million square foot US National Security (NNSA) campus; improving infrastructure on Main Street in Kansas City, Missouri; projects for the Kansas City Zoo; and the student residence and academic buildings of the Kansas City Art Institute.

The industry veteran is currently building the $ 193 million Johnson County Courthouse, the Pembroke Hill School extension and the new Jackson County Detention Center.

In general, Musser has been working in commercial real estate for over 40 years, including 15 years as an architect and 24 years as a development manager.

“In my profession, every project has its own developmental challenges: neighbors objections, insufficient budgets, team members not working, cumbersome entitlement processes, clients unable to make decisions,” Masser said. “But these are the challenges that make each project memorable and worth the effort.”

Musser points to his calm demeanor and experience of successful team management as two reasons for his success. He also said that his experience in architecture has given him extensive knowledge of design and construction.

Education also played a key role in Musser’s success. He graduated from the MIT Real Estate Center with a master’s degree in development. This program helped Musser move from architecture to a career in real estate.

Outside of work, Musser is active in his community. He serves on the executive board and board of trustees of the Kansas City Art Institute, the Main Street Corridor Development Corporation executive committee, the Kansas City Design Center Advisory Board, and the Kansas City ULI Executive Committee. Musser also enjoys spending time with his wife and family, traveling, reading, and serving on the boards of nonprofit organizations.
