Commercial Real Estate Firm Camden Requires COVID Vaccine For Employees

Camden, the owner and operator of apartments across the country from Houston, is demanding that all employees be vaccinated against COVID-19 as the delta variant continues to spread.

“We want to do the right thing,” said CEO Rick Campo. “It’s about creating a safe workplace.”

The company told employees on Tuesday that all team members will need to be fully vaccinated by October 11.

“We just decided to take the position of the company and hope that other companies will too,” Campo said. “The only way to get this pandemic under control and stop the fourth, fifth or even sixth wave is to draw a line in the sand and say you have a choice: get vaccinated or work elsewhere.”

Camden employs 1,700 people, including 500 in Houston, at its headquarters and 170 apartment buildings.

This decision follows similar requirements from companies across the country, including United Airlines, Google, and local firms Houston Methodist and ZT Corporate.

Camden, with more than 59,000 apartments in Texas, Florida, California and other states, saw an increase in COVID cases among its employees this summer. Throughout the pandemic, he made changes to ensure the safety of employees and residents of his apartments.

Since the start of the pandemic, apartment staff have been deemed essential and have remained in place. Demands on them increased as more people worked from home, Campo said, and procedures such as requiring appointments at the rental office, social distancing and wearing masks were introduced.

The company encouraged employees to get vaccinated and spread the facts to combat disinformation on social media. Campo encourages employees with concerns to speak with their doctors.

According to Julie Keel, vice president of marketing for Camden, the workforce will accommodate religion and disability exceptions. Tax-exempt employees must wear a mask, get tested weekly, and reapply for exemption every 90 days.
