BURTON Albion has signed Jacob Maddox for a seasonal international loan from Vitória Sport Clube, subject to international approval.
Yesterday, the 22-year-old trained with his new teammates for the first time before heading south with the team ahead of Saturday’s pre-season friendly against Bognor Regis.
Maddox joined Chelsea at the age of 14 from Bristol City, where he won the FA Youth Cups and the UEFA Youth Cup in a row while at the academy.
He had a successful second league loan season with Cheltenham Town in 2018/19, playing 44 games. The loan moved to Tranmere Rovers the following season, but injury limited his influence to just two appearances in the EFL Trophy.
Southampton became Maddox’s next destination, where he spent half a season playing for the Saints U23 before leaving Chelsea seven years later to sign his current parent club Vitória SC, which plays in the Portuguese league Primeira.
The attacking midfielder has also represented England at all levels from 16 to 20, notably by winning the UEFA European Under-19 Championship with his country in 2017.
“He will offer us different options in midfield and is versatile. He can play on the flank as well as in the center, ”said manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.
“He’s going home. He is still young, and he has something to prove. I have known him since the days of Chelsea and we look forward to welcoming him and accommodating him here. “
“After talking with the manager and seeing how the team finished last season, I am looking forward to what we can achieve this season,” said Maddox.
“I know my qualities and I know how I can help the team, so I look forward to getting started.”
Welcome to Burton Albion, Jacob!
