Birmingham Salvation Army Offers Rent, Mortgage And Utilities

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC). Despite the CDC extending the eviction moratorium during the pandemic, there is still an urgent need to help people who are trying to make ends meet.

The Greater Birmingham Salvation Army offers rental, mortgage and utilities assistance to people living in and around Jefferson County. The agency says it has processed all eligible applications, so it’s really just waiting to help more people. National Salvation Army figures show that 63 percent of people currently live from paycheck to paycheck.

Last year, the agency provided financial assistance to more than 700 families, for which about $ 700,000 was spent. The cash aid is a combination of funding from the Jefferson County Commission, United Way of Central Alabama, and Navigate Housing.

If you or someone you know needs help, you are asked to contact the Salvation Army Office at 205-328-4536. The case manager will screen people to check for lost income and once the paperwork is complete. The processing time is 7-10 business days.

“Each person is different for each specific case, so we can help people once, but it can be several months, but each curator will evaluate it,” – John Stamps, Chief Operating Officer.

The Salvation Army says it plans to continue providing assistance even after the moratorium so that people who still need help can receive it.
