Arsenal bought from defender Takehiro Tomiyasu Bologna for € 18m and allowed longtime right-back Héctor Bellerin to join Real Betis on a seasonal loan.
Takehiro, a 22-year-old who can play as a right-back or center-back, has played for Bologna since joining Belgian club Sint-Truiden in 2019 and made 23 appearances for Japan.
“Takehiro is a strong defender with extensive experience in Serie A and internationally,” said Mikel Arteta. “He is a versatile defender with excellent defensive qualities, high technique and composure with the ball.”
Tomiyasu is the third defender to join Arsenal this summer, following Ben White and Nuno Tavares, and continues the club’s policy of targeting young players with potential profits. All six signers were 23 years of age or younger. Arteta’s side conceded nine goals in their first three Premier League matches, all of which ended in defeat.
Bellerin joined Arsenal 10 years ago at the age of 16 and has played 239 appearances for the club. He has not played this season after falling out of favor and joining Real Betis after his salary issues were resolved.
The other two Arsenal players went on loan on the last day. Striker Reiss Nelson, with whom the club will sign a new contract until 2023, moved to Feyenoord, and goalkeeper Alex Runarsson moved to Belgian club OH Leuven.
