Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Runarsson preparing to go on loan in Leuven

Arsenal goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson is close to joining Belgian team Oud-Heverly Leuven on loan.

Runarsson, 26, joined Arsenal from Dijon, France at the start of last season.

However, the Icelandic footballer failed to impress during his stay in north London, playing single-handedly in the Premier League during the 2020-2021 campaign.

Arsenal this month signed Aaron Ramsdale of Sheffield United for £ 30m to compete for Mikel Arteta’s starting lineup with Bernd Leno, further limiting Runarsson’s options at Emirates.

Athletic understands that the deal with Leuven, the sister club of Leicester City, is not a purchase option. Runarsson has a contract with Arsenal until 2024.
