Housing channel, a Fort Worth community organization that promotes home ownership and access to affordable housing, is urging homeowners struggling with home payments after the pandemic to seek help through the Texas Mortgage Emergency Assistance Program (TEMAP), which provides mortgage loans to help homeowners low- and middle-income people affected by COVID-19.
The program can pay up to six months on the eligible homeowner’s mortgage, including late payments, with at least one of those months covering the coming month. To qualify for assistance, applicants must meet income requirements and other criteria, such as loss of a job due to a pandemic, lower wages, or loss of business income.
Donna Van Ness, president of the Housing Channel, said it is critical that homeowners who are late with payments (or fear it will soon happen) act immediately to save their homes.
“Foreclosure is a daunting prospect, so it is understandable that many people become paralyzed, so to speak, and avoid the problem because they are afraid to face reality,” she said. “But hiding the problem will only make matters worse. We have helped hundreds of people avoid foreclosure and keep their homes over the years, and after they take the first step to contact and ask for help, they were often pleasantly surprised to learn that they have more options than they thought. But the longer you wait, the more difficult it is to help us – and if you never call, we won’t be able to help you at all. “
With limited funding for TEMAP, Van Ness stressed the need to contact the Housing Channel and apply right away.
“In addition, we want people to call us even if they don’t think they are eligible for TEMAP, or if they are tenants who are struggling with rent and utilities as a result of the pandemic,” she said. … “Our housing consultants are extremely knowledgeable. They are the best people you can talk to for free advice and resources to help you keep a roof over your head and protect your most valuable asset – your home. ”
